F.A.Q – Aurora Van
Aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural light display that occurs in the polar regions. It is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. When these charged particles, also known as solar wind, reach the Earth’s atmosphere, they collide with gas molecules, such as nitrogen and oxygen, and cause them to emit light.
The Best time depends on your preferences but in general September- March is great. September-October is perfect if you prefer warm weather and no snow. From November onwards you can expect snowy views and later it gets in snowy and winter moods. I would suggest September -October if you don’t want snow and at the same time want to enjoy strong Autumn aurora. If you have snow and winter in mind then i’d suggest February-March. However, December and January is my favourite time to explore the Aurora borealis in polar night landscape.
The best places to see the aurora borealis are typically in high-latitude regions close to the magnetic poles. Finnish Lapland is a great place to see the aurora, especially in the cities of Utsjoki, Kilpisjärvi, Rovaniemi, Levi, Inari, Muonio, and Saariselka. It’s important to keep in mind that the aurora is a natural phenomenon and can be unpredictable, so there is no guarantee that you will see it, even if you go to one of these destinations. It’s also important to choose a location that has minimal light pollution and a clear view of the sky to increase your chances of seeing the aurora.
I am based in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. I pick you from Rovaniemi centre or from your accommodation. This place is at a latitude of 66°30 north in the Arctic Circle. The location is also have good connections with Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway.
I pick you up from your accommodation in Rovaniemi. Tour Ends in The same place where it starts (if not agreed otherwise).
Tour might start from a different place (if agreed beforehand) for example, Private Aurora Hunting Experience
You can book the AURORA VAN tour directly from here. https://auroravan.com/booking/
Yes. It is possible depending on the availability. I suggest to book few days before if possible. It’s also better to plan according to the weather conditions. Send me a WhatsApp DM a bit early during the day (if same day).
The tour price is 250€ (September-November & January 4- March ). Price is 300€ per person in December. You pay the tour price only if we see the aurora during the tour. It means we can get a decent picture from the lights. If we don’t the aurora for some reason even though we tried during the hunting then you pay only the service costs. For example fuel etc. The service cost is 50€ per person for one night Aurora expeditions.
Tour starting time is in the evening around 6-7 pm but depending on the weather conditions and the aurora activity, we might need to start early or later. So the starting time would be between 17:00-22:00. It’s very hard to give any specific clock time because the weather is changing all the time and aurora activity isn’t possible to predict earlier.
Please remember that the auroras looks very different in the naked eyes. In high quality professional cameras the colors and lights are more vibrant. It’s also different during the full moon lights. During the bright moon Aurora might look like white cloud or faint green over the sky. Check the Moon Phase schedule before you book the tour. https://moonphases.co.uk/
It’s possible to see those dancing lights from the end of August until to the beginning of April, but the best chance to see them is when it’s getting dark evenings in fall or when the spring is slowly rising after dark winter and ”kaamos”.
The aurora borealis appears as a colorful and dynamic display of lights in the sky, with colors ranging from green, pink, and purple to red, blue, and yellow. The intensity and frequency of the aurora borealis are influenced by solar activity, with the most intense displays occurring during periods of high solar activity.
No, the aurora is not always green. While green is the most common color of the aurora, it can also appear in other colors, such as pink, purple, blue, and red.
The color of the aurora depends on the type of gas particles that are colliding with the charged particles from the sun. When charged particles collide with oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere, they can produce a green or yellowish-green aurora. When they collide with nitrogen, they can produce a blue or purple aurora. The exact colors that appear can also depend on the altitude at which the collisions occur.
The color and intensity of the aurora can also change over time, depending on the strength of the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. So while green may be the most common color of the aurora, it is not the only color that you may see.
Tour fits best for the individuals, small groups. Depending on the specific tour day weather and aurora activity kids can participate with all other participants.
I would suggest to book a Private tour if you are family with small kids.
I am a professional Photographer and aurora photography is a major part of the tour. Tour includes high quality photos with professional cameras, pick up and drop off to the accommodation/pick up spot, small snacks and the of course the aurora hunting. Photos are unlimited depending on the aurora activity. You get the high quality photos (best ones) via WeTransfer link to your email. If we are fortunate enough to capture a video or Aurora Timelapse you will get it for free. Pictures/videos are free for your own use only.
You need to have big positive energy, warm clothes, snacks or light food and most importantly lots of patience. Warm clothing is not included in the price.
